March 2003 Newsletter/Board Meeting
First Annual Heart to Heart Ball Was A Great Success!
We have some great pictures from the Heart to Heart
Ball taken with the cameras on the tables. Susan Davis
will put a scrapbook together "after taxes",
so we will have a lasting memory of February 15th. I am
still getting e-mails and notes thanking us. There should
be a "Thankyou Ad" in the Ledger to all our donors.
Those donors are what made the money for us. The live and
silent auction and special raffle brought in $10,000 of
the net proceeds which was approximately $15,800. I just
found out we may have another $750 donation coming. I will
let you know. Great work!! We will be doing this event
again next year so keep your ears open for possible donations
or ideas to use for 2004.
The next meeting will be at 6:00 p.m., Monday, April 21st.
Come and see Peni in her Mickey Mouse ears!! Hope you can all make it. Give
some thought to changing the meetings to every other month instead of every
month. I would also like to have another Saturday morning meeting soon. This
would be a great time to play the video that Guy Stark filmed for AEWF especially
for those of you who have not seen it. It is awesome!! Give me your feedback
on those ideas.
Granting Wishes is what we are all about!
You will be happy to know we have two wishes on the front burner and one on
the back. ------ "Arla Rae", at Diamond Ridge, in Pittsburg, asked
if we would fly her lifelong friend Shirley Kern out from No. Carolina to be
with her for a few weeks. Arla is in fourth stage of breast cancer which has
gone into her bones and she does not have much time left. Arla's daughter,
Lori, is not able to house Shirley so the Ramada Inn is giving us a room for
Arla for three weeks. The new manager, Mr. Karimi has generously given us the
room, which includes breakfast, at a reduced rate. Shirley is flying in tonight
on Delta Airlines, which also found us a discounted rate. We have arranged
for East County Connection shuttle to bring Shirley from Oakland Airport to
the Ramada Inn, because Lori is unable to meet the plane. Arla has a car that
Shirley will be able to use during her visit. We will also try to get some
donated gift certificates at Carrow's, Lyon's and Denny's to give to Shirley,
because she does not have much money to spend. I plan to go by Monday to meet
both women and any of you are welcome to go by Diamond Ridge or call Shirley
at the Ramada Inn and welcome her.
-----"Juanita's" special wish is to have a "luau" at a
hall for about 125 of her family and close family friends. Juanita is from
Brentwood and is a mother of nine. She is with Heartland Hospice who told Jauanita
about our foundation. Most of her family do not know that she is terminal so
she wants to have them come to this festive party and have a happy time and
always remember the good times and their mother and grandmom with the "Hawaiian
hat" The wish committee decided we could get a hall, some decorations,
and the food and beverage for this occasion. She was asking us for the Brentwood
Community Hall but they are booked on Saturdays. One open date was found at
Flor Do Oakley Hall for May 3rd, but there may be a wedding in Juanita's family
that day so they will let us know on Monday. We have contacted David at Hibar
Hawaiian BBQ in Antioch and he is willing to help us with the cost of catering
some food in exchange for some publicity. Does anyone have a connection for
flowers? Juanita wanted some flowers to make leis. Carnations would probably
be the best. The Antioch Senior Center has some decorations we could use and
Brenda has offered their hall as well if we can't find anything in Brentwood
or Oakley. Juanita has the music and dancers etc. covered. I will keep you
posted on the final date because we will need some help decorating and possibly
with clean-up too.
-----the wish application for the next wish has not been returned as yet but
our gentleman wants to see someone special from Salt Lake City. I will let
you know when the application comes in.
The next special event will be our participation in the
Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament, June 1st at Lone Tree Golf Course.
Let the office know if you would like to volunteer that day or if you have
a foursome, or if you know others that would like to golf. Letters will be
going out by April 1st , to our past supporters and golfers. We also get credit
for donations for the auction so see if your cleaners, favorite restaurant
or retail store will donate something, let the office know and we can get you
a letter with our Tax ID#.
Getting the Word out about Elderly Wish
Let the office know if you or a neighbor belong to a club or church that would
benefit from our video presentation. It is 12 min.long and very informative.
Remind anyone you tell about AEWF that our website is www.elderlywish.org Thanks
to Dave and Jinni Ciruli we have a "Classy" website. The office has
gotten three calls this week from people who live out of state that saw our
website.
