May 2003 Newsletter/Board Meeting
AEWF Friends, June 7, 2003
Thanks to all of you who helped with the Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament. Our presence
was appreciated and recognized both on the "Wine Hole", and the "Vacation
Hole". The good news is that Roger and "JJ" were not hit by
any of the wild golf balls, thanks to a well placed tree. We shall see if the
wine hole team ( Greta, Susan D., Marcheta, and Sharon & Sam) brought in
more money then the vacation hole (Rebecca, Roger, Bobbi Ann and JJ). Thanks
Clay for taking care of all the volunteers with lunch, sodas etc. Once again
Brenda made the tent look very festive with the colorful tablecloths and decorations
and beautifully wrapped cloth napkins no less. First class!! Also thanks to
you Bobbi Ann. They loved those chips and salsa!! The dinner, raffle and auction
went off without a hitch. I even won a raffle prize!! Thanks too for the donations
some of you made for the raffle, especially Jack Monroe and Sharon. I will
send you the report on the proceeds to AEWF as soon as Dave and his city staff
give me the results.
At our May general meeting we decided that we will meet every other month beginning
July 21st. We will continue to meet on the third Monday at 6:00 pm. Please
mark your calendar for next month. There will not be a meeting in June. Bill
Chapman will attend Fundraising Day in S.F. on Tuesday (no cost thanks to SBC).
Hopefully, he will bring back some helpful information regarding grants. Each
of you has an assignment this summer..... I am asking you to set up one date
with a church group, service club or health organization for a presentation
of our video and a chance to speak about AEWF. We need to reach people over
the hill in Contra Costa County, and make them aware of our services. We need
wishes!! Roger, please put together a letter which we can mail to elder attorneys
or financial planners, to inform them about our service, so they in turn will
suggest AEWF for planned giving.
We have been asked to play in the "Celebrity Bocce Tournament", July
25th at Chichibu Park, 9-4 benefiting the Rivertown Jamboree Committee. Let
me know if you would like to participate (978-1883) by representing AEWF. Any
suggestions for a team name? No Bill, we will not name it that!! We need four
players. We will also have a booth at the Rivertown Jamboree the last weekend
in September. Who would like to work about three hours on Sat. or Sun.? We
may do the quilt raffle again or something different???? Ideas anyone?
Save the date now for the 2004 "Heart to Heart Ball".
It will be held on Valentines Day, February 14th, 2004 at
the Nick Rodriquez Community Center. It is President's Day Weekend again, but
the general feeling is we filled it up before and we can do it again, and that
we don't want more than 160 people anyway. Those that attended know that is
all we can handle. The big help will be for each of you to give the office
names of major sponsors who will make large donations to underwrite the event.
If you vacation this summer, get the business cards of hotels, restaurants,
novelty shops, wineries, spas so we can contact them for donations for the
silent and live auctions. Tell anyone you meet about our organization and what
it is all about, carry our brochure with you. You will be amazed how many people
want to make a gift donation. We have lots of storage so if they want to give
you something, take it!!
I hope all of you have a nice, cool summer full of fun, with family and friends.
For those who are travelling please have a safe trip. Let me hear from you
by e-mail or phone in the next couple months. How would you like to become
more involved? I will send the minutes and treasurer's report from May's Meeting
as soon as they are ready. Anyone who would like to do some kind of bi-monthly,
two sided Newsletter for AEWF let me know! Any ideas of what to name it?
FYI:
The Delta Gazette will carry a story about Arlene Matsuda, our 27th Wish, in
their June 25th issue. Rhonda Pederson, Arlene's daughter, sent AEWF a thoughtful
note thanking us for fulfilling her mom's wish in April. Now, her mom is gone
but she has those special memories which she thanks us for.
Any of you who are interested in being part of the newly organized Antioch
Committee on Aging, please contact Brenda Perry at 779-2823. The monthly meetings
are at 9:00 am, the fourth Wednesday of the month, in the Leisure Services
conference room, at 3rd & F St. (Nick Rodriquez Community Center). We need
to address the housing and & transportation issues here in Antioch. Ask
a friend or someone you know to join you at the next meeting, June 25th, and
be a voice for our Antioch seniors.
More later,
Mary Chapman |
